From Survival to Success: The Life-Changing Power of Education in Haiti

The Real Catalyst for Change

Haiti is a beautiful country, full of culture and resilient people. But beauty doesn’t erase hardship. It remains the poorest country in North America, plagued by political instability and declining access to education—especially for children. Our partner orphanage experiences these realities firsthand.

Pastor R, the founder of the orphanage, dreams of the children flourishing as both citizens of Haiti and of Heaven. He wants them to use the skills they learn to rebuild their nation. In a place where survival often comes before schooling, education is usually the first thing to go—but it’s also the one thing that can break the cycle of poverty for good.

The Current Landscape of Education in Haiti

Education in Haiti has been in crisis for years, but civil unrest has made things even worse. According to UNICEF, only 1 in 7 children in Haiti are currently attending school. Many have been forced to flee their homes and prioritize survival over learning. Still, these displaced children long to return to school. They’re hungry for knowledge and hope.

For those who can stay in school, the rising cost of living makes it even harder. Education costs vary by region, but can range from $5,500 for pre-K to $16,500 for high school—an impossible amount for most Haitian families.

Even among children who start school, only 22% go on to secondary education. That’s what makes our partner orphanage so remarkable. Every child there is enrolled in school. It’s not the norm. It’s a miracle. And we know it’s God who is making the impossible possible.

In a country where many children are forced to stop learning, the kids at the orphanage are thriving in a safe home, getting an education, and building a future.

Why Education = Long-Term Transformation

Without education, most young Haitians face a grim reality. Many scramble daily for basic needs. Some attempt to start businesses without resources. Others risk dangerous, illegal routes to flee the country—or fall into the grip of gangs.

These are not scare tactics; they’re facts. Pastor R continually emphasizes that the kids need education to flourish. In Haiti’s current environment, there is little to no opportunity without it.

Search the headlines, and you’ll see it—closed borders, violent gangs, blocked resources, and international silence. Haitians are largely left to fend for themselves. That’s why education isn’t just valuable—it’s essential.

In our previous blog, Education is a Lifeline: How Supporting Orphans Transforms Lives and Futures, we shared more about these challenges. If you haven’t read it yet, we invite you to click [here] to learn more.

Stories of Hope

If these kids are image-bearers of Christ—and we believe they are—then they are also our brothers and sisters. So we ask: why wouldn’t we want the absolute best for them?

Here’s how education has changed their lives:

“I was brought to the orphanage when I was six. My father called Pastor R to take me because my mother wanted to kill me. I’m thankful to be here. I’m grateful to God for keeping me out of gangs.” – 17-year-old.

“My mother brought me to the orphanage when I was six. She wanted a better life for me. I didn’t have a father to care for me. I want to be a nurse so I can help others.” – 15-year-old.

Before coming to the orphanage, many of these children lived in danger, hunger, or isolation. Some had parents who loved them but couldn’t care for them. Their lives have changed dramatically. Now, they’re safe, they’re learning, and they’re dreaming.

How Monthly Donors Are Building a Sustainable Future

Thanks to a small but growing group of monthly donors, we’ve started to plan better and provide more consistently. While we still have a ways to go, this growth has made a huge difference.

In the past, we faced each need—rent, tuition, emergency repairs—without knowing where the money would come from. We always started with prayer (and still do), but now we can also budget and steward those resources more wisely.

Monthly donations help us:

  • Cover consistent needs like food, electricity, and education
  • Plan ahead for large annual costs, like school tuition and rent
  • Set aside funds for emergencies

Think about your own life. Could you plan for a car repair or a home emergency without a monthly budget? Neither can we. More monthly support means better care for the children, today and tomorrow.

Right now, we’re fundraising for the 2025 school year. We need $16,000 by August to cover tuition. Would you consider giving? Your donation is a direct investment in a child’s future.

A Call to Build the Future—One Child at a Time

Before arriving at the orphanage, many of the children had no dreams and no hope. Now they do.

They’re becoming who God created them to be—full of potential and purpose. Pastor R and his wife are raising these children as their own, but they cannot do it alone. They need partners. People who will pray. People who will give.

Monthly support makes it possible to:

  • Feed every child, every day
  • Keep the lights on and the water running
  • Send every child to school
  • Save for emergencies and long-term needs

This is your invitation.
