The Hidden Challenges of Orphan Care in Haiti

In 2023, the AP News reported that 30,000 children live in private orphanages across Haiti—spread among 750 institutions. Alarmingly, many of these orphanages operate at the lowest government rating, meaning they should be shut down. The article told the heartbreaking story of a brother and sister forced to sleep on a concrete floor, barely surviving, and desperately longing to be reunited with their parents.

This tragic reality is far too common in Haiti. But praise God, this is not the story for the children at OMFCA! We want to give you a behind-the-scenes look at how OMFCA is caring for the 17 children in our orphanage—the unseen struggles, cultural challenges, and the victories we’ve witnessed over the past seven years. Keep reading to learn how Pastor and his wife are faithfully caring for these children as Jesus commanded and how your support is making an eternal impact.

Financial Struggles: Meeting Daily Needs

In many Haitian orphanages, it is culturally acceptable to provide the bare minimum. While this isn’t true for every institution, it is a widespread issue. We firmly reject this standard—it is inhumane and unbiblical. Jesus calls us to care for the least of these, specifically mentioning orphans and widows (James 1:27). That means loving them as if they were Jesus Himself. Pastor and his wife embody this calling every day.

Despite limited resources, Pastor always prioritizes the children’s needs. We’ve seen his selfless heart firsthand—he once endured a medical issue for months without mentioning it because he didn’t want to divert funds from the children’s care. His sacrificial love reflects Jesus’ own sacrifice and deep care for His children.

Right now, we need to increase our monthly support by $1,500 to ensure that the children receive three well-balanced meals every day. While they always have food to eat, their diet is often limited to beans and cereal. Meat and fresh produce are included when finances allow. Monthly donations are crucial for sustainability, ensuring these children receive the care they need.

At OMFCA, financial support covers:

  • Monthly expenses (food, clothing, and basic needs)
  • Rent
  • Educational costs
  • Long-term savings for higher education

Our mission is to see these children flourish as citizens of both Haiti and Heaven. Pastor’s dream is our dream—to raise and equip these children to be leaders who transform their communities.

Education: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty in Haiti. The opportunities available to an educated young adult are life-changing. Common professions include:

  • Educators
  • Nurses
  • Mechanics
  • Business owners

One of our core missions is to ensure that every child at OMFCA completes their education. Pastor is passionate about keeping the children in Haiti rather than sending them abroad, believing that the best way to strengthen Haiti is for educated, Christ-centered leaders to remain and serve their communities.

Education is an annual expense, and the Lord has faithfully provided. We would love to see each child sponsored for their remaining education. This would allow us to start fundraising for higher education, ensuring that when the first child graduates next year, we can support her dream of becoming a nurse.

Unexpected Emergencies and Crisis Management

When our organization first partnered with OMFCA, the orphanage was located in Port-au-Prince. In recent years, the capital has become one of the most dangerous places in Haiti, plagued by gang violence, kidnappings, and instability. For months, Pastor updated us on the deteriorating security situation, and we faced the difficult question: Should we relocate? And if so, how?

Despite very limited funds—and a healthy dose of doubt from our Board—the Lord miraculously provided. Pastor’s unwavering faith was contagious, and he often reminded us, “Just pray, and the Lord will provide.” And He did!

Pastor likes to say, “Haiti is just Haiti.” Common challenges in Haiti include:

  • Unreliable electricity and infrastructure
  • Unethical landlords
  • Transportation barriers
  • Sudden spikes in the cost of goods

While we know obstacles will come, we trust in God’s provision. Every challenge we’ve faced has been met by His faithfulness through the generosity of people like you.

Conclusion: Be Part of God’s Work in Haiti

Caring for these children isn’t just about meeting physical needs—it’s about showing them the love of Christ in every aspect of their lives. At OMFCA, we want to see them thrive spiritually, emotionally, and educationally.

The challenges of orphan care in Haiti are real, but so is God’s provision. We’ve seen Him make a way—securing safe housing, providing education, and surrounding these children with love. But there’s still work to be done.

Your generosity allows us to keep saying “yes” to these children’s futures. Whether through monthly giving, one-time donations, or prayer, you are a vital part of this mission. Will you help us continue this work?

🙏 Pray for Pastor, his wife, and the children as they grow in faith and knowledge.
