Have you ever wondered what living in an orphanage in Haiti is like?
We guarantee that living at OMFCA is much better than you probably envision for an orphanage in Haiti. However, they still face challenges.
The orphanage we partner with is more like a huge family. Pastor R and his wife are both Christians, so every child in their care is another child to care for. God tells us that we are all created in his image. Everyone who follows Jesus is one of our brothers or sisters in Christ.
Praise be to God. Two of our board members safely traveled to Haiti to visit the orphanage. They wanted to encourage Pastor R and his wife with fellowship. They were also there for Pastor Mike, our Vice Chairman, to visit for the first time. He wanted to see what life in Haiti at OMFCA is like firsthand.
While they were visiting, they sat down with Pastor R. He told the story of how OMFCA was created. He also spoke about the challenges they’ve faced since 2011. Additionally, he shared how they see God at work despite many challenges over the years.
From Despair to Hope: The Birth and Growth of Uplift Haiti’s Mission
When two earthquakes hit Haiti in 2010 it destroyed the island. There was death and destruction everywhere! Pastor R recounts that it felt like everything was disappearing. He thought, God is coming and we’re going to heaven!
Obviously, we know that didn’t happen. At the time, there was so much destruction. It resembled what we read in Revelation about the end times.
During this great devastation, Pastor R felt the spirit’s call. He realized he needed to be a father to the kids living on the streets. These kids had no food, and some had no family to take care of them.
In 2011 they started the orphanage with two boys.
The orphanage quickly grew. From 2015 to 2017, times were difficult. They weren’t sure what they were going to do. Pastor R said” Things were not like how they are today. It felt like something was wrong. We tried to pray and said, Lord, please we need somebody else. We need more partners!”
God answered their prayers in 2018. Jesse, our Chairman, met Pastor R and his wife during his visit to Haiti. He went there to see firsthand how the orphanage was run. They got their first church partnership through Jesse’s connections. They began to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Fast forward to 2020 when Uplift Haiti, Inc. was officially created. The board was organized. We began marketing and searching for donors. These donors are passionate about helping the kids at the orphanage flourish as citizens of Haiti and Heaven!
Overcoming Obstacles: Providing Food and Education for Haiti’s Orphans
When Pastor R was asked, “What are the biggest challenges that the orphanage deals with?” he laughed at the thought of the magnitude of challenges they’ve faced in twelve years. He then responded with two challenges: food and school.
Feeding everyone is the biggest challenge the orphanage faces because the price of food changes all the time! You never know when it will change, or if you will be able to find what you need close by. Sometimes they have money for a lot of food. It will feed everyone two meals a day. Other times they have to get by with only one meal a day.
We know that the cost of food changes dramatically in Haiti. We never want the kids to only have one meal a day. This is why we’ve been working on raising monthly support. With more monthly donations, we can increase how much money we send each month. This will help cover food and other monthly expenses.
The cost and availability of food changed because of the continued violence and attacks going on throughout the country. This causes roads to be closed. This blocks them from getting to the cheaper market. It also reduces the amount of available goods at the market for people to buy.
The second challenge is sending all of the kids to school.
School in Haiti is not free. The orphanage has to pay for all fourteen kids to attend school every year. This expense includes tuition, books, and uniforms each year. Additionally, they have to pay for transportation for the kids to get to school. Thankfully, the Lord graciously provided a vehicle for them to buy and quickly provided the money! This will dramatically affect their transportation cost in 2025!
Each year we pay around $20,000 for the kids to attend school, which includes books and uniforms. Tuition is due in full in August every school year.
Faithful hands, lasting impact
Pastor R and Agnes are the hands and feet of Jesus. They obeyed God’s calling to care for the orphans in Haiti. They continuously rely on God. They model what it looks like to surrender your life fully to God, as Jesus did.
We know the Lord is using this couple to positively influence the kids. They have changed their lives practically and spiritually.
Not only are they changing the kids’ lives, they are beginning to make an eternal impact on their community! Pastor R started two worship services outside of their home and their community has begun attending. Praise God!
We can’t wait to see what God will do through the orphanage. It will bring new people to Him and change the culture of Haiti! Join us in praying expectantly. We hope the Lord brings the entire community to their knees. Let them surrender their lives to Jesus!
God miraculously provided this house for OMFCA two years ago. He also miraculously provided the money for rent in 2025 in less than a month. We KNOW that he will significantly impact this community. His servants, Pastor R, his wife, and the kids in the orphanage will help achieve this.
Witness the Miracles and Join the Journey
The orphanage has been around since 2011. God has already accomplished so much through his children. We know he’s not even close to being done!
We’ve seen God move in amazing ways. He protected the orphanage from gang violence before they moved. God miraculously provided a house. He also provided the money to rent it. Our budget didn’t look like it would support it. Now, He’s allowed them to stay in this house for another year. They preach the Gospel to their neighbors every week!
